While growing up in the upstate New York area, Chef Burrell developed a passion for food and cooking early on. Her passion was for working in the restaurant business by enrolment in The Culinary Institute of America after obtaining a degree in English and Communications from Canisius College, Buffalo NY. The Culinary Institute of America was a wonderful experience for me. It was difficult to master and do enough or put in the hours. After graduation, Burrell spent one year in Italy studying at the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners and worked in the Umbrian restaurant La Taverna del Lupo as well as Tuscany's La Bottega del 30, an Michelin-starred restaurant.
